AZALINA! APOLOGISE OR BE REFERRED TO HOUSE COMMITTEE OF PRIVILEGES - PRESS STATEMENT

I am aghast by the false statements made by the Minister for Tourism, Azalina Othman during Question Time in Parliament on Tuesday 4 November 2008, which were aired live on RTM1 and reported by major newspapers and blogs today.

From the news reports, she had misled the august House, among other misleading information, on the following:-

1. That I did not attend the opening of the Ministry of Tourism's launch of 'ZOOM' ('No party sentiments in promoting tourism', Bernama, 5 November 2008)

2. That I was invited to Pulau Carey during the Minister's visit there. ('Pelancongan: Negeri pembangkang tidak dipinggir, Utusan Malaysia ms 8, 5 November 2008)

3. That I lied to the Honourable Member of Parliament Shah Alam, Khalid Samad ('We're fair to all states: Azalina', The SUN, page 6, 5 November 2008)

For the record, I was present at the Ministry's launch of 'ZOOM' where Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi graced the event. The Exco for Tourism from Kedah, Penang and I even had the opportunity to speak to the Prime Minister, who was seated on the next table.

The Minister challenged me to prove that I was never invited to Pulau Carey in her programme there (Berita Harian, 5 November 2008). Allow me to state publicly that I was never invited to Pulau Carey by the Minister. In fact the Minister herself has never stepped foot officially on Pulau Carey.

In Selangor, the Minister has visited the following sites - Batu Caves, Pulau Ketam and Royal Gallery Klang. On those occasions, I was left out on purpose, whereas by convention, I should have been informed to host or to to accompany the Minister.

Similarly, I have never received an invitation to programmes organised by the Selangor Tourism Action Council (MTPN-Selangor).

It is an open secret that since the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry and state governments was cancelled after the General Elections, and with the chairmanship of the State Tourism Action Councils in the 5 Pakatan Rakyat states relegated to BN officials, there has been very limited communication and cooperation of the Ministry with Pakatan Rakyat states.

Even the General Manager of the Selangor Tourism Action Council, when invited to meet me for discussions on tourism matters, was too frightened to meet officially. In the end, he only spoke to me on a personal basis.

The disconnect between the state governments and State Tourism Action Councils is glaringly unproductive and unhealthy for the nation. Further, the signal sent to the tourism industry is extremely negative and jeopardises the tradition of close collaboration of the state government with related government agencies.

I do not wish to prolong this unnecessary protracted war of words with the Minister. It has been 7 months since we took office, and the Minister should be looking into revamping the current communication channels to foster closer and productive ties with state governments. To carry on in this current mode of operations and communications is detrimental to the nation.

Nonetheless, Pakatan Rakyat states' Excos on tourism will continue to soldier on despite the odds, as we are mindful of the national importance of tourism to the economic health and wealth of the nation.

Tourism is a national agenda and all parties should be mindful that success in this sector needs proper official channels and access to plans, programmes and decision-making by the state governments to the Ministry of Tourism. Political interference serves only personal agendas. To this end, I have from very beginning, instructed state officials, including local councils, to cooperate fully with the Ministry of Tourism.

I call on the Minister to apologise publicly as her statements, assertions and insinuations have gravely affected my credibility and that of the Selangor state government. Failure to do so will compel me to refer the Minister to the House Committee of Privileges for censure.

Calon Demokrat, Barrack Obama mencapai kemenangan dan menjadi presiden kulit hitam pertama Amerika Syarikat. Manakala calon Republik, John McCain mengucap tahniah kepada Obama.

Sehingga jam 12.20 tengah hari ini, Obama mendahului dengan kutipan 297 undi berbanding calon Republik, John McCain yang memperoleh 145 undi.

Calon memerlukan sejumlah 270 undi untuk menang.

Kemenangan terbesar bagi Obama ialah apabila beliau diisytiharkan pemenang di Ohio dan Pennsylvania - tempat berlakunya kempen yang paling panas dan sengit antara kedua-dua calon tersebut.

Obama, 47, akan memegang jawatan presiden Amerika ke-44 pada pada 20 Januari depan, dan bakal berdepan dengan krisis kewangan yang terburuk sejak 1930-an, perang di Afghanistan dan Iraq serta pertelingkahan dengan Iran mengenai senjata nukleara.

Rangkaian stesen television meramalkan kemenangan Obama selepas beliau memperkukuhkan sokongannya di kubu kuat Demokrat serta berjaya menarik sokongan di kubu republik.

Pada jam 12.20 tengahari waktu tempatan, McCain mengaku kalah dan mengucap tahniah kepada presiden baru Amerika itu.

Tidak seorang pun calon preside selepas John F Kennedy pada tahun 1960-an yang menang jawatan presiden tanpa mencapai kemenangan di Ohio, Pennsylvania dan Florida.

Obama juga menang di New Mexico, sebuah lagi kerusi parti Republik yang diperlukan oleh McCain untuk menambah peluangnya untuk menang jawatan presiden.

Obama turut mencatat kemenangan di Washingtonm Oregon, California, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Illinois, New Jersey, Maine, New Hampshire, Washington DC, Delaware, Michigan, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, dan Minnesota.

McCain pula antaranya mencatat kemenangan di Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, South Carolina and Oklahoma, Alabama, Arkansas, Wyoming, Louisiana, Kansas dan Texas.

Seperti yang diramalkan, McCain menang di Kentucky dan West Virginia manakala Obama menang di Vermont.

SYDNEY: Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) is estimated to have spent US$12 billion (RM42.4 billion) during September to defend the ringgit, said Moody’s Economy.com.

Moody’s said the ringgit was among Asia-Pacific currencies that had depreciated despite current account surpluses, the others being the Singapore dollar and Philippine peso.

“Sound current accounts may have created a bottom for these currencies and they have ‘only’ depreciated by 5% to 10% since June,” Moody’s Economy.com economist Tine Olsen said in her report yesterday.

She said other currencies in the middle group had fallen because of deleveraging, while those experiencing the biggest depreciation, including South Korea, Indonesia and India, also struggled with current account deficits.

Olsen said Asia-Pacific currency markets had been driven recently by the liquidity squeeze and by current accounts as risk-averse investors moved funds from high-risk markets to safe havens to avoid losses, and also to preserve liquidity.

These include the unwinding of carry trades — the repatriation of funds from high-interest countries to repay loans taken out in low-interest countries.

“As the liquidity crisis eases, investors turn their attention to economic fundamentals to determine the value of national currencies,” Olsen said.

She said the global economic slowdown had encouraged investors to avoid countries with deteriorating current accounts, as they feared export weakness would put downward pressure on currencies.

Olsen said running against the trend of currency markets was the Japanese yen, which is a global reserve currency. The yen has appreciated against the US dollar, but all other major regional currencies have fallen against the US dollar since June.

She said the Australian and New Zealand dollars had been battered in the markets since June, seeing depreciation of 35% and 27%, respectively.

“Monetary policy rates have come down and investors have deleveraged, making the two currencies less attractive than they were earlier.

“At the other end of the scale is the Japanese yen, with an appreciation of 10% due to its status as a safe haven and its role in the carry trade,” she said, adding that as uncertainty increased, investors commonly moved funds out of high-interest countries and paid off their low-interest yen-dominated loans.

Olsen said the forces behind exchange rate movements varied greatly, as were the responses by governments.

“An economic slowdown and looser monetary policy in New Zealand and Australia have reduced the carry trade: borrowing in a low-interest country such as Japan and investing in Australia and New Zealand is no longer as profitable.

“This was amplified by the liquidity squeeze. Interest rates have come down from 7.25% to 6% in Australia and from 8.25% to 6.5% in New Zealand. Investors may have also been discouraged by the current account deficits in these two countries,” she said.

Olsen said if investors began to worry about Australia’s current account deficit, the Australian dollar would be severely challenged in the near term.

She said the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) intervened three times in the Aussie market, purchasing the domestic currency two Fridays ago and again last Monday and Tuesday. It has been more than a year since the RBA intervened in currency markets.

Olsen said in Indonesia, by contrast, the central bank was intervening often as it was trying to keep the rupiah steady after the currency reached the psychologically important level of 10,000 rupiah per US dollar.

“With an inflation target of 4% to 5% and annual inflation at 13.6% in July on a year-ago basis, it appears Indonesia has abandoned its inflation target and now focuses on exchange rate stabilisation,” she said.

Olsen said the region’s most troubled currency was the Korean won as doubts about the state of the Korean current account and South Korean importers’ high exposure to the US dollar had prompted traders to stage what at times looked like a run on the currency.

“The government’s repeated assurance that its foreign reserves are healthy has not stopped the exit, and the won has depreciated more than 40% since the end of June.

“The drop appeared to have been halted this week (last week) by a smaller-than-expected current account deficit for September and a currency swap line with the US Federal Reserve. On Thursday, the Korean won jumped 14% as a result,” she said.

Olsen said on a crude scale, the yen’s 10% appreciation matched the depreciation of smaller currencies with no underlying current account problems.

“An exchange rate movement of 10% may therefore be assigned to increased uncertainty and the liquidity squeeze in global markets, and has happened regardless of the sign of the current account.

“How much of the remaining part of exchange rate movements can be assigned to the unwinding of carry trade and worries about the current account is harder to quantify,” she said.

Olsen said the depreciation of Australian and New Zealand currencies was mainly driven by carry-trade reversal, whereas the Korean and Indian currencies had been brought down by speculation about their current accounts.

“As credit markets thaw, currencies may be expected to reverse the 10% move, which was based on the liquidity squeeze.

“Currencies with underlying current account deficits face turbulence in the near future, as a global slowdown puts pressure on the trade balance. Finally, high-interest currencies may be further challenged by looser monetary policy,” she said.

Star : Big shake-up in police narcotics dept

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 60 police officers, including an Assistant Superintendent, and personnel from the narcotics department have been suspended, demoted or transferred in a nationwide clean-up exercise.

Some were alleged to have close links with drug syndicates while others were said to be complacent and shoddy in their investigations.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said the order to remove them with immediate effect was part of his efforts to clean up the force.

It is learnt that more than 40 officers and men are from the Johor police contingent while the remaining are from the Kuala Lumpur and Penang police contingents.

“If there is evidence to charge any of them, we will do so. They have had ample warnings.

“The shake-up has been ongoing for almost two months and a task force is going around the country and identifying those who are giving us a bad name,” he said.

It is learnt that all those who had disciplinary action taken against them and transferred to other duties would be required to attend a “refresher” course and counselling to get them back on track and to do real police work.

Musa said that besides transferring more than 40 police officers and personnel, they also ordered the detention of three detectives under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1985 (Special Preventive Measures).

Several others, including an Assistant Superintendent, have also been suspended for their alleged “close links” with suspected syndicate members.

The shake-up in Johor started after the theft of more than RM1mil of syabu from the state police headquarters’ evidence room.

kemaskini 3:35pm Pemuda Pakatan Rakyat menggesa kerajaan Selangor menggantikan isteri timbalan perdana menteri, Rosmah Mansor sebagai canselor Universiti Industri Selangor (Unisel).

Universiti milik penuh kerajaan negeri itu melantik isteri Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak sebagai canselor pertamanya pada Ogos 2006.

Unisel, yang ditubuhkan pada 1999, diuruskan oleh Pendidikan Industri Yayasan Selangor Sdn Bhd (PIYSB) yang dipengerusikan oleh menteri besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) Selangor bersama Pemuda PAS Selangor dan DAP Selangor akan menyerahkan surat bantahan kepada Abdul Khalid esok.

Dalam surat bantahan itu, Pemuda Pakatan mahu Unisel mencari seorang calon canselor yang "lebih bermoral dan berintegriti."

"Rosmah mempunyai nilai moral yang dipertikaikan oleh masyarakat. Rosmah bukan untuk gedung ilmu, tetapi lebih tepat untuk gedung membeli-belah," kata ketua AMK negeri Khairul Anuar Ahmad Zainudin.

Dihubungi Malaysiakini hari ini, beliau bagaimanapun menafikan bantahan itu bermotifkan politik.

"Ini bukan soal musuh politik, ini tentang maruah universiti," katanya, yang juga naib ketua Pemuda PKR.

Menurutnya lagi, secara teknikalnya, penggantian jawatan itu boleh dijalankan dalam masa sebulan.

Mengulas calon yang bakal menggantikan bakal wanita pertama itu, Khairul Anuar berkata:

"Ramai lagi tokoh-tokoh dalam Pakatan, dalam PKR, DAP dan PAS yang layak mengisi jawatan itu.

"Contohnya naib presiden PKR Dr Syed Hussin Ali sendiri yang lama bergiat dalam politik dan yang mempunyai penguasaan akademik dalam bidang antropologi."

Sembilan ahli politik Umno di Kedah sedang disiasat oleh Badan Pencegah Rasuah (BPR) berkaitan mesyuarat perwakilan Umno Kedah sejak sebulan lalu.

Menurut laporan-laporan media, pengarah BPR negeri Nooraziah Abdul Manaf berkata, sembilan kes berprofil tinggi itu dibuka daripada 51 fail sepanjang tempoh Januari hingga semalam.

Beliau berkata, siasatan sukar dilakukan kerana saksi enggan tampil memberikan maklumat kerana takut dengan pemimpin Umno terbabit, lapor laman web Berita Harian.

Bagaimanapun Star Online melaporkan, Nooraziah enggan mendedahkan parti terbabit dan nama-nama ahli politik berkenaan.

Dalam tempoh yang sama, BPR menerima 736 aduan berhubung rasuah dan pecah amanah.

Nooraziah berkata selepas majlis serah tugas jawatan itu daripada Idrus Jaafar yang bertukar sebagai pengarah BPR Pulau Pinang di Alor Star hari ini.

Bapa Altantuya Shaariibuu, Dr Shaariibuu Setev, telah menghantar surat kepada Peguam Negara, Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail menggesa beliau mengemukakan rayuan terhadap pembebasan penganalisis politik, Abdul Razak. Baginda.

Karpal Singh yang merupakan peguam pemerhati bagi keluarga wanita Mongolia itu, berkata beliau menyerahkan surat itu bagi pihak Dr Shaariibuu, kepada Abdul Gani tengah hari ini.

Katanya beliau turut menghantar surat itu melalui faksimili ke Pejabat Peguam Negara Jumaat lalu.

Mengikut undang-undang, pendakwaan diberi tempoh 14 hari untuk mengemukakan rayuan ke Mahkamah Rayuan. Tempoh itu tamat 17 November, demikian menurut laporan Bernama.

Abdul Razak, 48, dibebaskan tanpa dipanggil membela diri terhadap pertuduhan bersubahat dalam pembunuhan Altantuya oleh Hakim Mahkamah Tinggi Shah Alam Datuk Mohd Zaki Md Yasin pada Jumaat lalu.

Abdul Razak, pengarah eksekutif Pusat Penyelidikan Strategik Malaysia, dituduh bersubahat dengan dua anggota polis daripada Unit Tindakan Khas (UTK), Cif Insp Azilah Hadri, 32, dan Koperal Sirul Azhar Umar, 36, dalam pembunuhan Altantuya di Wilayah Persekutuan antara jam 9.54 pagi 18 Oktober 2006 dan 9.45 malam
keesokannya.

Azilah, dan Sirul Azhar diperintah membela diri terhadap pertuduhan membunuh ibu dua anak lelaki yang berumur 28 tahun itu di Mukim Bukit Raja, Selangor, antara jam 10 malam 19 Okt 2006, dan 1 pagi keesokannya. Mereka menghadapi hukuman mati jika sabit kesalahan.

Semasa memutuskan pendakwaan gagal mewujudkan kes prima facie terhadap Abdul Razak, mahkamah menerima afidavit Abdul Razak yang mengandungi kenyataan pembuktian tidak bersalah yang menurut mahkamah telah menyangkal dan membatalkan
tuduhan bersubahat yang dihadapinya.

‘Boleh direman'

Sementara itu, dalam surat tersebut, Karpal Singh berkata, Shaariibuu (foto) dan Setiausaha Kedua Kedutaan Mongolia di Thailand, Siizkhuu Sainbileg, bertemu dengannya tengah hari keputusan itu disampaikan, memintanya menulis surat kepada Abdul Gani memintanya memfailkan rayuan.

"Kami berpendapat wujud kes prima facie terhadap Abdul Razak Baginda dan beliau patut diperintah membela diri.

"Oleh kerana kes perbicaraan ini telah menarik perhatian antarabangsa dan dalam negara, kami amat berbesar hati jika notis rayuan difailkan secepat mungkin," katanya dalam surat itu.

Sementara itu, Karpal berkata, Abdul Razak menghadapi kemungkinan ditahan semula dan direman sementara menunggu keputusan sekiranya pendakwaan mengemukakan rayuan ke Mahkamah Rayuan terhadap pembebasannya.

Katanya, pendakwaan boleh membuat permohonan itu mengikut Seksyen 56A Akta Mahkamah Kehakiman 1964 untuk menghalang Abdul Razak daripada melarikan diri.

Katanya peruntukan itu membenarkan pendakwaan memohon kepada Mahkamah Rayuan untuk mengeluarkan waran tangkap terhadap Abdul Razak dan meremannya sementara menunggu keputusan rayuan itu.

Seksyen itu juga membenarkan pendakwaan mengemukakan permohonan untuk membebaskan Abdul Razak dengan ikat jamin sementara menunggu keputusan rayuan itu, katanya.

Raja Petra boleh dibenar jadi saksi kes Altantuya - Syed Hamid

Menteri Dalam Negeri, Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar berkata, tidak ada sebarang sekatan bagi mana-mana tahanan Akta Keselamatan Dalam Negeri (ISA) termasuk Raja Petra Raja Kamaruddin untuk menghadiri sebarang prosedur mahkamah.

"Sememangnya tidak ada sekatan untuk mereka yang ditahan ISA untuk hadir di mahkamah," katanya kepada mStar Online.

Beliau berkata demikian bagi mengulas cadangan yang dikemukakan Peguam Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin yang mewakili tertuduh kedua, Koperal Sirul Azhar Umar dalam kes pembunuhan wanita Moggolia, Altantuya Shaariibuu yang ingin mendapatkan Raja Petra sebagai saksi pihak pembelaan.

Raja Petra yang kini ditahan di bawah ISA pernah mengeluarkan Akuan Bersumpah berhubung kes berprofil tinggi itu.

Syed Hamid berkata jika ada permohonan daripada mana-mana pihak untuk mendapatkan keterangan Raja Petra sebagai saksi, pihak kementerian boleh memberikan kebenaran.

"Kalau ada (permohonan), boleh dapat kebenaran... boleh," katanya.

Bagaimanapun menurutnya, sehingga semalam beliau masih belum menerima sebarang permohonan berhubung perkara tersebut.

"Belum ada lagi, saya belum dapat apa-apa maklumat. Mungkin sebab hujung minggu," katanya.

Dalam perkembangan berkaitan, beliau turut diminta mengulas mengenai khabar angin yang mengatakan Raja Petra akan dibebaskan daripada tahanan ISA.

Namun beliau menafikan mengenai perkara tersebut.

"Tak ada... saya tak tahu pula khabar angin beliau akan dibebaskan," katanya.

Razaleigh: Ada bahagian minta 'rasuah' pencalonan RM2 juta

(mSTAR) Ketika dakwaan politik wang dalam pemilihan Umno menjadi tumpuan ramai sejak kebelakangan ini, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, yang gagal memperoleh pencalonan mencukupi untuk jawatan Presiden Umno, mendedahkan terdapat bahagian yang meminta sehingga RM2 juta sebagai ganjaran pencalonan.

Ketua Umno Bahagian Gua Musang itu berkata, kini permintaan dan tawar-menawar ganjaran bagi pencalonan-pencalonan yang diberikan berlaku secara terbuka.

"Ahli-ahli Umno kini secara terbuka mahukan manfaat-manfaat kewangan apabila mahu memberi pencalonan.

"Satu bahagian dengan jelas meminta RM1 juta manakala di Sabah, harganya mencecah RM2 juta," kata beliau di sini semalam.

Dua minggu lalu bekas Perdana Menteri Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad mendedahkan tahap serius gejala politik wang dalam pemilihan Umno berkata, seseorang perwakilan 'berpeluang' memperoleh sehingga RM20,000 sebagai ganjaran undi.

Ketika ditemui di sini awal bulan lalu, Razaleigh mendedahkan kira-kira RM200 juta digunakan untuk tujuan kempen dan membeli undi dalam pemilihan Umno kali ini.

Bekas Naib Presiden Umno itu menyatakan demikian pada hari beliau gagal memperoleh pencalonan mencukupi untuk kerusi Presiden sebaliknya ia dimenangi tanpa cabaran oleh Timbalan Presiden Datuk Seri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak.

Sambil menjelaskan bahawa beliau sanggup berkhidmat untuk parti tetapi dengan syarat kepimpinan parti boleh meyakinkannya bahawa beliau tidak menyumbang khidmat kepada parti-parti yang berasuah.

Tegas beliau, tindakan memancing undi menggunakan wang dan menghalang anggota daripada bertanding hanya akan menamatkan riwayat Umno lebih awal.

Ahli Parlimen Gua Musang ini juga mengakui bahawa wang diperlukan ketika berkempen tetapi ia tidak seharusnya membawa kepada gejala membeli undi ataupun menggunakan kuasa bagi menghalang pertandingan.

"Amalkan model AS dalam soal kutipan dana untuk tujuan berkempen, boleh diamalkan dalam Umno untuk mengawal politik wang," katanya.

Jelas beliau, usaha semasa mengawal gejala politik wang dalam Umno dan menyerahkan kepada Badan Pencegah Rasuah (BPR) sahaja tidak mencukupi.

Ketika ditanya sama ada beliau akan menarik daripada bertanding jawatan Presiden, Razaleigh berkata, beliau tidak perlu menarik diri kerana tidak dicalonkan langsung untuk kerusi berkenaan.

"Sila lihat perkara yang saya katakan. Saya menawarkan untuk bertanding jawatan sebagai seorang ahli biasa.

"Kita ada hak. Oleh kerana saya tidak dicalonkan, tidak perlu bagi saya menarik diri. Jika anda mahu saya menarik diri, ia sama seperti meminta saya menarik diri (keluar) daripada Umno," katanya lagi.

It is time for you all to be the has-beens that you should have been a long time ago, if not for your cheating and scheming to stay in power by all means, mainly foul.

It would be better for you to leave now, before I expose all your dirty little secrets. Remember Shaheen and how you and Adenan sold a whole ship tanker-load of Malaysian crude oil - which promptly "disappeared" - when you were Minister of Primary Industries - without an L/C to a group of "Arab-looking gentlemen"? Are we to believe that you, with your photographic memory, didn't even remember their names?

What happened to RM150 million of the State Government's money which you withdrew from Bank Utama during the Ming Court affair but didn't make it into the State's other bank accounts until after the election? Didn't you use it to fund your re-election campaign and didn't 5 Chinese tycoons pay RM30 million each to replace it after you had won? Didn't they then get timber concessions in the hundreds of thousands, even millions, of hectares worth so much more than this (billions of ringgit in fact) and which you also had controlling shares in?

I'd like to go on, but it really is tiring keeping up with all that you have done to enrich yourself, your family and a few cronies in the State over your 27 years of misrule. I will if I have to and you don't step down. There are many more stories to tell.

You have made more than enough already and you now have one foot in the grave. Do you want to bring it all to your grave? You cannot control what happens after your death - the staggering fortune which you, your family and cronies have stolen from Sarawak will never be safe, whether you resign, die or stay on. You will be cursed for ever.

At the very least do us all a favour - in slight mitigation for your wrongdoings, resign while you still can and let us try to repair the damage that you have caused to Sarawak for so many decades.

I would rather not have your head on a pole unless I really have to and you leave me and other Sarawakians with no choice but to destroy you completely, which God willing we will.
