MT : VC fined RM5,000 for contempt of court

(Bernama) - Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) vice-chancellor Nordin Kardi was fined RM5,000 for contempt of court in having failed to abide by an injunction issued by the Alor Setar High Court last July.
Judicial Commissioner Zamani Abdul Rahim, who handed down the sentence in chambers, ordered Nordin to pay the fine in two weeks from today, failing which he would be sent to jail for a month.

On July 8 last year, a company running UUM's Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme obtained a High Court injunction to restrain the university from continuing with the programme.

Lawyer CV Krishnadevan, who represented KIC Management, said UUM however failed to abide by the court order, leading to the company to file for a warrant of committal.

Meanwhile, KIC Management director Azahar Abdul Rahman said the company sought the injunction after UUM, by way of a letter dated May 18, cancelled the joint-venture agreement with the company to run the programme, effective June 1.

He said that according to the agreement signed on Sept 1, 2008, the party seeking to terminate the contract must give six months notice in writing and after the last session had ended.

Meanwhile, lawyer Hashim Jahaya, who represented Nordin, said he would discuss with his client whether or not to appeal against the decision.
