PUTRAJAYA: Pakatan Rakyat Youth submitted to the Malaysian Commission Against Corruption (MACC) today CD recordings containing allegations of a cover-up of the Altantuya affair, and the commission has apparently swung into action, summoning a leader of the group to its Putrajaya office.
The recordings feature private investigator P. Balasubramaniam talking to lawyers about his conflicting statutory declarations and alleging blackmail, bribery and a cover-up of the Prime Minister’s alleged relationship with Altantuya Shaariibu, a Mongolian model whose body was blown up by explosives.
Shamsul Iskandar Mohamad Akin, who is youth chief for Parti Keadilan Rakyat, said the Bala interview, aired on Youtube, indicated that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak knew Altantuya.
“We want several matters investigated, especially the claim by Bala that people associated with Najib offered him RM5 million so that he would retract the contents of his first statutory declaration,” said Shamsul, referring to Bala’s “Bombshell 3″ exposure.
Shamsul has been told to go to the MACC office in Putrajaya at 9 am tomorrow for commission officers to record his statement.
Bala’s interview has been widely publicised online but virtually ignored by what has come to be called the “mainstream media,” which are either aligned to or controlled by the ruling Barisan Nasional.
Bala claims in the interview that he was blackmailed into withdrawing his statutory declaration of July 1 and was forced to retract his allegation against Najib through a second statutory declaration released on July 4, 2008.
Shamsul said at least seven aspects of Bala’s allegations needed thorough investigations by the MACC.
He said Bala repeatedly stated that the contents of the first statutory declaration were true although Najib has taken an oath on the Quran that he never knew Altantuya.
“I again ask Najib to come out publicly to comment on Bala’s interview; otherwise the image of Malaysia will remain tarnished for ever,” said Shamsul .
He also said that PKR, Pas and DAP would launch an online petition soon to demand for an independent commission of inquiry into the alleged cover-up of the Altantuya affair.
Two policemen were sentenced to death for the murder of Altantuya, a lover of Najib’s aide Abdul Razak Baginda, who was released without his defence being called on an abetment charge. The convicted two belonged to a special police unit called Unit Tindakan Khas (UTK).
